I've been out of graduate school now for exactly three months. It has been a welcome relief from the constant pressure of finishing my thesis project. I've also finished with designing my latest production—Shrek, The Musical—that played at Foothill College's Smithwick Theater in late July/early August.
Unfortunately, the relief I felt after graduation didn't even have time to settle before I started on Shrek. At a run-for-your-life pace, I designed four months worth of work in six weeks. We finished most of the big set pieces at 4pm on opening night and the smaller details over the next three weeks. Not really atypical in my experience, but I'll think twice before I accept a big a job with too little lead time. Still, If it means that I can work with Director Milissa Carey, Technical Director Bruce McLeod, Lighting Designer Michael Ramsaur and Costume Designer Julie Engelbrecht and other talented designers, then I'm in!
A much larger show than I've done previously–the Smithwick's a 900 seat theater.
