The Secret Garden: Opening scene for graduate scenic design assignment of The Secret Garden by Marcia Gordon. I show three scenes that take place at different times but all occur in the same setting. My design makes use of a trio of Tudor arches that recur in the production, raising and lowering according to the setting. Flames are projected onto the flat surface to show how the house is burned to the ground. Fog drifts in to create an eerie effect. I rendered the whole project in Photoshop.
The Secret Garden is one of my favorite musicals. I could see it again and again. In this scene Mary wanders through the galleries of portraits while ghosts of the past surround her. The arches of the previous scene are still present but now a swag made from metal mesh hangs in front. Light projected onto the front brings the swag to life.
The Secret Garden: the beauty of the moors is framed by these three arches now shown with a stone pattern. The painting in the background is by Jim Wright.
